Fourths League win away to Academy
The River Ridge Recycling backed Ballmoney fourths made it two wins from two in the league with another strong display away to Academy thirds, claiming maximum points on the way. The good weather conditions, saw Ballymoney out-score their opponents by six tries to three, with a physical display of hard, fast rugby. Academy could not live with the tempo and determination this improving Ballymoney side played the game.
Try scorers were centre Darren Smyth with two, Jimmy Speers, Andy Borthwick, Ryan Brace and Timmy Hanna completing the scoring. Ballymoney suffered an early scare when Academy took a quick lead. At this stage Ballymoney’s full team had not taken to the field. Following the restart and Ballymoney’s full contingent on the pitch. The travelling team soon began to find their rhythm, scoring three tries without reply, before the break. Jimmy Speers finishing a fine score, sprinting in from just inside his own half. Halftime score Academy 7 – 19 Ballymoney 19.
The second half saw Ballymoney continue their dominance and soon added to their lead. Fly half Ryan Brace with a fine individual try. Try of the match came soon after from Darren Smyth. The inside centre collected a perfectly placed punt from fly-half Ryan Brace. Darren jinked his way through the remaining Academy defence line to score an excellent try. Ryan Brace converting five of the scores.
Match day captain Darren Smyth commented after the game. “I am extremely pleased with our performance; we played some nice rugby today, with our finishing again clinical. It is great to see the team delivering a performance like that. Each team member played their part. The forwards dominated procession and set the platform as they continually presented the half backs with fast, clean ball. I am pleased with the character we showed in defence and held on for the win”
Although numerous players had strong displays during the game, including Rab Shannon, Pete Johnston, Chris Clarke to name a few. The man of the match award has to go to Timmy Hanna. The hooker bossed the game both in the scrum and loose play. Timmy was rewarded with a fine charge down try for his efforts.
The fourths league campaign continues next Saturday when they travel to face Ballyclare 4ths.
