Ballymoney’s 2XV travelled to Belfast on Saturday to take on a strong Harlequins side.
The visitors received the kick-off and immediately fronted up with purpose, taking the game to the home defence. After an evenly fought opening exchange, Ballymoney earned a penalty and calmly slotted the kick to put the first points on the board.
The Toonmen continued to battle hard, but it was Harlequins who struck next. Despite some determined defensive work, the hosts managed to cross the line twice before the interval, leaving Ballymoney trailing 12–3 at the break.
The second half began with the visitors showing real intent, working through the phases and pressing for territory. Unfortunately, a promising passage of attacking play was undone when possession was lost, and Harlequins capitalised with another score.
Undeterred, Ballymoney hit back through a well-worked move of their own, finishing under the posts for a converted try to narrow the gap. The momentum, however, swung back quickly as Harlequins responded with another try of their own.
The closing stages saw relentless pressure from the Toonmen, who threw everything at the home defence in search of more points. Despite their efforts, Harlequins held firm to see out the contest, with the match finishing 24–10.
Plenty of positives can be taken from this performance, with great determination shown across the pitch. A special mention goes to the new lads who made their first run-out for the 2s — here’s to many more in blue and white!
The focus now shifts to the next challenge as Ballymoney welcome Armagh to Kilraughts Road on Saturday 18th October.
